Nutrition

Nutrition is as important as your training. Without the right nutrition you’ll never get the results that you are aiming for.
The importance of a good nutrition plan is often overlooked by triathletes but it is vitally important to race day success. If you don’t take in enough energy supplies to replace the calories burned your body will be running on empty. This will result in sub optimal performance. There are a whole range of nutrition products on the market; gels; bars; drinks; tablets etc and much will depend on personal preferences. It is important to find a range of products that provides you with the necessary carbs during the race that works well for you and does not produce any un-welcome side effects. Race with what you train with and obey the golden rule of don’t try anything new on race day.
Nutrition is highly personal. My approach is to use the Secret Training range of nutrition products that have been developed by Tim Lawson, ex UK track cyclist. They are easy to digest and simple to follow:
1. Training rides
Use Secret Training training mix which provides a slow release of carbs you’re your body. Easy to absorb they come in a variety of flavours, such as pineapple, orange and water melon. (link here to a document on this product). For extra carbs try the Istonic gel range and the real fruit energy gels in banana and mango and passion fruit.
2. Racing/High Intensity work out
Use the Super hydration mix and a combination of the Caffeine and Betaine energy gels and the isotonic gels to deliver easy to absorb carbohydrates at 60-80 grams per hour.
3. Post Race/activity recovery
Secret Training whey protein provides a wonderful protein shake and should be taken approx. 20 minutes after intense exercise to replenish tired muscles. Available in banana and cherry flavor.
All Finish Line Coaching athletes can receive 20% off Secret Training Nutrition products.
